Business leaders to act as ambassadors for Glasgow International Airport

26 February 2010

Three of Scotland's most successful entrepreneurs have agreed to act as business ambassadors for Glasgow International Airport in a campaign to position Glasgow as Scotland's main business and leisure gateway.

Jim McColl, Chairman & Chief Executive of Clyde Blowers, John McGlynn, Chairman of the Airlink Group, and Chris Gorman, Chairman of the Entrepreneurial Exchange, are to take on the role in a bid to promote the city and airport.

The three entrepreneurs have extensive business interests, and contacts, across the UK, Europe and beyond. As ambassadors for Glasgow International Airport, they will foster closer ties between the airport and local, national and international businesses, and provide greater insight into the travel needs of the business community.

The 'Glasgow Gateway' initiative is the brainchild of Amanda McMillan, Managing Director of Glasgow International Airport, who aims to build on Glasgow's status as Scotland's gateway to the world.

With direct flights to Africa, Asia, Europe, Central America and North America; Glasgow International Airport is truly Scotland’s only intercontinental airport and with more destinations that any other airport, Glasgow International it the ideal gateway to and from Scotland.

Airport bosses hope the plan will encourage more business travelers to use Glasgow International Airport, and ultimately attract new flights, aimed at the business market, to key destinations across Europe and beyond.

The airport envoys will also be encouraged to provide feedback on their experience as regular business passengers of Glasgow International Airport, and share examples of good customer service from other airports around the world.

A package of incentives is planned in a bid to encourage business travelers to fly to and from the airport, including fastrack parking, security and lounge access.

Amanda McMillan said: "We are delighted that three of Scotland's most successful entrepreneurs have agreed to act as business ambassadors for Glasgow International Airport. They are some of Scotland's greatest business talents, with an impressive track record of business success, and an extensive network of contacts in the UK, Europe and beyond. We are confident that we can harness those contacts, and the entrepreneurial spirit of our ambassadors, to encourage more businesses to use Glasgow International Airport as their gateway to and from Scotland.

"We are grateful that they have agreed to support our initiative and confident that they will prove worthy ambassadors for the airport. Their advice and feedback will allow us to deliver a better experience for regular business travellers, and indeed for all passengers."

John McGlynn, Chairman and Founder of the Airlink Group, is one of the business leaders backing the initiative. He said: "Glasgow International Airport plays a vital role in the economy of Scotland, supporting inward investment and inbound tourism, both of which are essential for a successful economy. This recession has hit the air travel industry hard, but instead of sitting on their hands and waiting for better times, the airport team has responded with a series of campaigns designed to win new business.

"I am personally delighted to support this latest initiative. It shows a real determination on the part of the airport to encourage more business travelers to use Glasgow International Airport, and promote the city's airport as the natural gateway to Scotland for overseas visitors."

Glasgow Chamber of Commerce is also backing the campaign. Chief Executive Stuart Patrick said: "This initiative harnesses some of Glasgow's, and the UK's, leading entrepreneurs to actively promote the city and what it has to offer. It is exactly this kind of initiative that the city needs to encourage investment and growth. A successful airport is vital to the city's prosperity. I welcome Amanda McMillan's vision and the Chamber will do what it can to continue to support the growth of the city's airport."

The new ambassadors have already set to work, with a range of innovative ideas designed to promote Glasgow and its main airport under discussion.

FlyGlasgow condems competition appeal tribunal decision

25 February 2010

FlyGlasgow, today (25 February 2010) condemned the decision by the Competition Appeal Tribunal to overturn the universally acclaimed decision by the Competition Commission to force the break-up of the BAA airport monopoly by requiring the BAA to sell London Gatwick, London Stansted and Glasgow International.

Today’s decision, which was based on a finding that there might have been an appearance of bias in relation to one of the six members of the Commission, because of his advisory role to the pension fund of the employees of shareholders of Manchester Airport Group plc, is in FlyGlasgow’s view damaging to competition, damaging for consumers, damaging to British tourism and damaging to the economy.

As a result of this decision, the sale of Glasgow International will now be delayed for a minimum period of two years, with the result that traffic at Glasgow International Airport will continue to decline, as consumers suffer squalid and inefficient terminal facilities and continue to be victimised by the BAA monopoly’s high charges.

FlyGlasgow believes that a sensible and practical outcome to any finding of an appearance of bias in this case would be for Manchester Airport Group plc to be prohibited from bidding for London Stansted and/or Glasgow International.

The original decision to break-up the BAA airport monopoly was universally welcomed by airport users, airlines and national newspaper editorials all over the UK. More importantly, none of the substantive findings of that decision was challenged by the BAA.

It’s no coincidence that the only major airport in Scotland which is set to grow in 2010 is Glasgow Prestwick Airport; Scotland’s only major airport not controlled by the BAA monopoly.

Speaking today, a FlyGlasgow Spokesperson said: “The original Competition Commission decision to order the break-up of the BAA airport monopoly was welcomed by the entire airline industry, passengers and the national media. Today’s decision, which appears to be based on a legal technicality (or irrelevancy), will now delay the much needed introduction of competition and consumer choice at Glasgow International by at least two years. We regret that passengers at Glasgow International will pay higher charges and suffer inferior facilities for at least two more years as a result of this regrettable Competition Appeal Tribunal decision.

“As traffic continues to decline at Glasgow International, and airlines and passengers continue to suffer high charges and badly run facilities, we again call on the BAA monopoly to sell Glasgow International Airport in order to introduce much needed competition in the Scottish airport market, or alternatively for the Court of Appeal to overturn the Tribunal’s ruling and bring forward the break-up of the high cost, inefficient and anti-consumer BAA airport monopoly in the interests of competition and a better deal for Scottish consumers, passengers and tourism.”

Glasgow top for conferences for fourth consecutive year

25 February 2010

Glasgow City Marketing Bureau has been named the UK’s Best Convention Bureau for the fourth year in a row.

In a poll for the influential industry magazine Meetings & Incentive Travel, Glasgow took the top title ahead of Newcastle Gateshead Convention Bureau, Yorkshire South Tourism and Conference Torquay at RICC.

Previous contenders London, Liverpool, Manchester and Birmingham failed to make the shortlist in the category this year.

There was more good news last night when the Scottish Exhibition & Conference Centre (SECC) took silver in the Best UK Conference Centre category.

The awards are considered highly prestigious because they are voted for by more than 3,000 meetings industry professionals and were presented at a gala dinner last night (Feb 22) at the Novotel London West Hotel attended by more than 600 industry leaders from around the world.

Councillor Steven Purcell, Leader of Glasgow City Council and Chair of Glasgow City Marketing Bureau, commented: “As an industry-led accolade, the M&IT Award is a clear endorsement of the confidence that the meetings industry has in Glasgow.

“For GCMB to have won this award four years in a row clearly demonstrates that Glasgow leads the way in the UK conference market.

“In the last year we have secured conventions business valued at more than £100 million in economic benefit for Glasgow and Scotland.

“Developing our conventions industry will continue to form an integral part of Glasgow’s economic strategy.”

Ben Goedegebuure, Director of Sales of the SECC, said: “Meetings & Incentive Travel magazine represents key buyers of conferences and exhibitions across the UK and beyond; our success in these awards is testament to the continually high standard of events we put on in Glasgow.”

Latest figures from the International Congress and Convention Association (ICCA) show that in 2008, Glasgow was the UK’s international conference capital, attracting more international delegates than any other British city.

Glasgow needs Brussels, Frankfurt, Madrid and Munich

02 February 2010

After London and Manchester, Glasgow is the UK’s third busiest gateway, handling up to 11.5 million passengers per year. As such, it would be expected that the city is well-connected to most of Europe’s major cities.

Currently only Amsterdam, Berlin, Copenhagen, Dublin and Paris are served daily. A new route to Cork will start later this year, bringing the total number of European cities served daily to six, with a total of 105 flights per week.

Being the United Kingdom’s second city, it would be expected that Glasgow would have daily links Europe’s economic capitals of Brussels, Frankfurt, Madrid and Munich. However the truth is, of these four cities, Glasgow only has direct access to Brussels, and that is just four flights a week to Charleroi with Ryanair.

Glasgow's selection of European city flights is among the worst of all UK airports, despite Glasgow being the third biggest market for air travel in the United Kingdom. Airports in Bristol, Leeds, Nottingham and even Southampton all have a greater selection of European city flights than Glasgow.

Glasgow’s existing European flights are all highly successful when compared with other UK airports.

24,000 passengers flew between Glasgow and Paris in July 2009. That’s similar to the number of people flying from Manchester and Birmingham to Paris, while being 10,000 more than from Bristol and 16,000 more than from Leeds.

Up to 9,000 passengers fly between Glasgow and Berlin every month. Figures show that the Glasgow to Berlin route carries more passengers than any other UK-Berlin route, outside London.

With the success of the city’s existing flights, is surprising that the city has so few flights to Continental Europe.

FlyGlasgow has contacted BAA several times about the appalling state of the airports European network, however on all occasions, BAA have failed to comment.

Pakistan air link 'to continue'

08 January 2010

A threat to end a direct air link between Glasgow and its twin city of Lahore in Pakistan has been lifted.

It comes after senior officials at Pakistan International Airlines held talks with Glasgow International Airport's managers twice on Wednesday. City council officials and Pakistan's consul-general in Scotland were also involved.

It was agreed there would be improved efforts to market the twice-weekly flights between Glasgow and Lahore. The plan is hoped to give the airline a higher profile in Scotland.

It will focus on an effort by leaders of the Pakistani community in Scotland to increase use of the route, or face a renewed threat of its loss.

It is understood that aircraft between Glasgow and Lahore have been operating at 64% of their capacity, whereas they need to fill about 74% of seats if they are to break-even.

This is being explained by poor marketing and a downturn in demand linked to economic problems in Pakistan and in Scotland.

FlyGlasgow would also like to thank and congratulate Glasgow Central MP; Mohammad Sarwar for the hard work he put into helping save this air service.

Emergency talks aimed at saving direct Glasgow to Pakistan flights

06 January 2010

Scotland’s only direct flight to Pakistan is facing the axe, prompting emergency meetings between civic leaders in Glasgow and the Pakistan government-owned airline that operates the Glasgow to Lahore route.

Mohammad Sarwar, the Glasgow Central MP, was due to meet officials from PIA Pakistan International Airlines in Glasgow last night and has petitioned the Pakistani prime minister and defence minister over the last fortnight in an effort to retain the twice-weekly service.

The route, which was started in 2005, has proved popular with the Pakistani community of 30,000 in Glasgow and is seen as a vital link for families and businesses.

The PIA officials, who travelled from Pakistan to Glasgow for last night’s meeting, are due to meet Glasgow International Airport owners BAA this morning to explore whether any additional support can be given to help maintain the route, Mr Sarwar said.

He added: “It’s a good service for the Pakistani community who travel to Lahore directly from Glasgow. Unfortunately, PIA is planning to withdrawn this facility, and community leaders are in dialogue with the group that is visiting from Pakistan.

“If the service is withdrawn, it will be a big barrier for people wanting to travel to Pakistan. It is a vital link for the Pakistani community in Scotland and people are angry and upset that PIA has suddenly decided to withdraw it.”

Glasgow City Council, which is officially twinned with Lahore, also expressed concern over the proposal.

A spokesman said yesterday: “Our prime responsibility is to the citizens of Glasgow and it is clear that this service to our twin, Lahore, is highly valued by a great many people in this city. We would like to see this service continue and will do what we can to facilitate an agreement between the carrier and the airport.”

An airline official confirmed yesterday that it was due to meet BAA over the proposed withdrawal of the service today but refused to comment further.

A spokesman for BAA added: “We are due to meet with PIA but it is too soon to say what the content of that meeting will be.” Reproduced with the permission of the Herald and Times Group.

Glasgow International Airport has suffered for too long under the BAA monopoly with high costs at the airport forcing airlines to operate from other airports and this cannot be allowed to continue.

FlyGlasgow is worried that this finding will allow the BAA monopoly to further delay the sale of Glasgow International Airport. The sale of Glasgow International Airport has the support of the overwhelming majority of airline users and passengers at Glasgow International, where high costs and the inefficient facilities delivered by the BAA monopoly has caused substantial declines in traffic over the past five years.

FlyGlasgow welcomed the Tribunal’s findings on the substantive elements of the BAA’s appeal, in which they dismissed the BAA’s claims that the Competition Commission did not take the timing of divestiture into account. FlyGlasgow also welcomed the fact that the Tribunal did not conclude that the Competition Commission’s decision to break-up the BAA monopoly was wrong. FlyGlasgow will, along with numerous airlines, continues to campaign for the urgent breakup of the high cost, inefficient, badly run BAA airport monopoly.

FlyGlobespan given 48-hour deadline extension

16 December 2009

Troubled budget airline FlyGlobespan has been given a 48-hour extension by the CAA to finalise an investment package that will save the airline from bankruptcy.

The company yesterday denied reports that it was on the brink of financial collapse after allegedly failing to receive payments from its credit card clearance company E-Clear.

The extension has given the airline breathing space to obtain funds from Jersey-based Halcyon Investment by Thursday afternoon.

FlyGlobespan has remained confident that it will receive the financial backing in time to satisfy the airline regulatory body.

In a statement released last night, owner Tom Dalrymple said the deal would allow the company to “expand its airline and associated products and services”.

The CAA reiterated that it would not comment on the situation other than to confirm the airline held both an ATOL and an Air Operator Certificate.

Flyglobespan directors are believed to be in a meeting now and more news is expected within the next 24 hours.

Crunch time for FlyGlobespan

14 December 2009

FlyGlobespan, Scotland's largest airline faces a "crunch-time" funding deadline tomorrow, which is likely to decide the fate of the company.

It's believed that Globespan, which was spared administration at the 11th hour last month, is still awaiting payments from Halcyon Investments, a Jersey-based special purpose vehicle.

It is understood the payment is linked to funds owed to the airline by E-Clear, a credit-card processing firm. Failure to receive the cash could force the airline into administration this week. A big-four accountant is on standby, and it is believed that the Civil Aviation Authority is once again being kept abreast of the firm's situation.

A source said: "This is not of Globespan's own making but the situation is once again very serious. We are getting to crunch time."

Globespan Group, which was founded in 1970, has around 900 staff and operates a fleet of more than 10 planes, primarily from Glasgow International Airport to holiday destinations such as Alicante and Orlando.

Globespan today confirmed that it is on the verge of successfully concluding a major investment from Halcyon Investments Ltd.

A spokesperson said Halcyon has negotiated an investment package with the Glasgow - based company that includes up front and future injection into the group to enable it to expand its airline and associated products and services.

Glasgow hotels are beating recession

20 November 2009

Glasgow is the only city in Europe where hotel bookings are up despite the recession.

The city has beat destinations including Barcelona, Amsterdam, Dublin and Paris by attracting more visitors to its hotels this year than last.

Glasgow's hotels have been at 75% occupancy, up 0.5% on last year and behind only London, which boasts the highest room occupancy in Europe at almost 80%. Room rates are also bucking the economic downturn in Glasgow.

Though the average cost of staying in one of the city's hotels dropped by £1 on last year to £63, the figure is nothing compared with the fall of the prices in cities such as Dublin, which are down more than 17% and Barcelona, which have fallen by more than 15%.

Tourism chiefs say Glasgow has continued to attract visitors because of its conventions and events as well as cultural events and shopping.

Scott Taylor, chief executive, of Glasgow City Marketing Bureau, said: "This global report by Deloitte tracks 38,000 hotels and five million rooms worldwide. European hotel occupancy has been on a downward curve since January 2007.

"Glasgow has continued to outperform its competitors.

"Its strong performance is reflected in the level of interest by developers and Glasgow is the place where smart money chooses to invest."

Construction work starts on Glasgow's newest arena

15 October 2009

Construction work has started on Glasgow's newest area, the arena which will be located at the SECC on the bank of the River Clyde will be known as Scotland's National Arena.

Scotland’s National Arena will be an exciting new addition to the expanding cultural and event hub at Glasgow’s Scottish Exhibition and Conference Centre. The new Arena will provide an outstanding indoor venue for concerts and performances. A highly flexible building, it is designed to accommodate a wide range of events - from pop concerts to grand theatrical shows. The Arena will provide both visitors and performers with the best possible experience of concerts and live performance.

As part of the new Queen’s Dock (QD2) development, the Arena’s relationship to the Clyde Auditorium and the river itself creates a fresh public approach to the SECC, framing a new outdoor square. The main entrance is carved into a generous top-lit ground level foyer. The second main foyer, at high level, has its own distinct character with views south through a glazed facade, over the public square to the river. The state-of-the-art auditorium provides a performance ‘bowl’ with seating for up to 12,500 people at ground level with a combination of fixed, retractable and removable seating to create different staging and concert layouts, including some sports events. The upper part of the building is clad in translucent material which allows the front of the building to glow at night and will also facilitate the projection of patterns or images onto the façade to subtly change its appearance.

The angle of the roof gives a low profile facing onto the expressway. Moving around to the south of the building, the façade reveals itself, culminating in the 40m-high front elevation. Internally, fixed seating wraps around the stage above ground level, rising further to the front to optimise the balance between viewing angle and distance to the stage. This gives the auditorium its distinctive sloping appearance. The roof of the auditorium will itself be spectacular, spanning 120 metres in a shallow dome of diagonally latticed steelwork.
